His second challenge was a poem by Frantz Wittkamp, who said, when I asked him whether I could use it for my project or not, I could do whatever I want to, he wasn’t afraid of anything, that he was happy his poem was in it. Exactly what I wanted to hear!

It’s four verses long, seems to be short but has so much to give, because it’s not clear if the duck or the nightingale is preferred. Kids love it, parents think about it ..

I absolutely don’t want to live without this poem.

Let’s get started, Paulo:

Wenn beide Eltern Enten sind, / If your parents both are ducks,

ein ganz normaler Fall, / which is an usual fact,

dann kriegen sie ein Entenkind / they’ll get a duck as child as well

und keine Nachtigall. / and surely not a nightingale.

(English Version by Lilli von Stengel)

—————————————————————————————–

Also Paulo, denn mal los:

Wenn beide Eltern Enten sind,
You could also call him a model, but I don’t.
Shortly after his arrival in my world I knew that he would be the beginning of my project, the first poem. Even shorter after his arrival I knew, it had to be „Joyful and sorrowful‘’ by Goethe, THE poem about love, ever. There is no Brasilian version, therefore we decided to let him say the German one. He was very open and joyful indeed, it was fun to teach him how to read it in German, even though he didn’t know one word of what he was trying to tell us.
All those summer evenings in Hamburg he practised and tried to feel the poem, tried to show those feelings with his tongue. An unbelievably big piece of work for him besides his actual work, a wonderful experience for me, a wonderful first speaker, who accomplished something beautiful. What a joy.
Here’s Paulo’s first take, yet another two are to come…so stay tuned:

Joyful
And sorrowful,
Thoughtful to be,
Yearning
And worrying
In lingering pain,
Heavenly jubilant,
Deathly despairing,
Happy alone
Is the soul in love.
